What is happening to The great Salt Lake?
It’s shrinking!
For hundreds of thousands of years, the three tributary rivers would fill The Great Salt Lake with water from the mountains and snowmelt.
As the Salt Lake Valley has grown in population, more and more of the water has been diverted away from The Great Salt Lake and toward housing development and farming. This has resulted in The Great Salt Lake shrinking by 60% since 1986.
4,200 feet about sea level has been designated as a the “Goldilocks level” for The Great Salt Lake. This is the level needed for the lake to maintain a healthy ecosystem.
